The web is full of rubbish, but I have no plans to stop using it just yet.
To me, it's not about the quantity, or even so much about the quality, it's about the price. As along as I'm not being offered a sundial compass for anything more than free, and it's presence in the App Store is not getting in the way of me finding what I need, then I'm not that fussed what's in the 'Crapp' Store.

Good post. I agree with James for the most part but at least for me the loads of crappy apps DO get in the way of finding what I want. A first I could browse the app store easily to find what I wanted. When the number of apps added per day increased I used an RSS feed to track the newly added apps. Now that has become unbearable and I just wait for a blog to review good apps or hear about good apps from friends and co-workers. I wouldn't waste my time browsing the iTunes store. I'm all for freedom of speech and app development but this is a crappy situation.

I agree, the "gold rush effect" will destroy the trust people have in the apps. The same happened with Facebook applications a year ago, history is just repeating itself. Apple has taken a different stance by being proactive and deleting some apps from the store already, but they're far from doing enough. I don't think Apple cares that much for now though, with a $100 pricetag on becoming a developer (not counting the phone!) they're already making tons of money from wannabe-gold diggers who think they're going to make it big on the app store. That's why they're pulling the NDA card on the store rejections, it has to look as if developing apps for the iphone is going to make you rich.
I think that for the issue of quantity/quality they're probably betting on it to work just like music on iTunes. There's tons of crappy music on iTunes too, but it's part of the vast sea of songs and most people buy music using only their recommendation engine, editorials or word of mouth.

Not for nothing, but to say "From the descriptions of most of them, I'd say there's a ton of unmitigated crud flowing into the App Store right now" is pretty irresponsible. Aren't you a developer? You're declaring other people's work to be "crud" without even testing it yourself. I liken this to me writing a post about how "Mowser is crap" using a three-sentence description of Mowser as my source. No; I would visit the site, play with it for an hour or so, test the functionality and then reach a conclusion. Of course the subject of something being good or bad is entirely subjective but I personally would have preferred an educated assessment as opposed to a blind rant.
Beyond that, a good number of iPhone developers are flying solo with English as a second or third language. They're not marketing guys and they can't afford to hire someone to polish their copy. Perhaps some of them didn't efficiently express themselves in those product descriptions you're citing as your source for determining apps to be crud. Cut a guy a break.

Sure, I'll go test all 450 apps and get back to you with a breakdown of exact crud percentages. Yeah, right.
If I *told* you my opinions were based on descriptions and overall quantity, then I'm being open and clear about it, and thus not "irresponsible." Additionally, the title has a question mark, no? Nor are there any statements like "it's all 100% shit." is there?
I'm always amazed at the sort of self-righteous nonsense people leave in comments.

You're absolutely right Russ. It's perfectly responsible to make uneducated blanket statements about people's work as opposed to posting something of substance. How self-righteous and nonsensical of me to think otherwise. After all, there was a question mark in the title.
With all of those handsets Nokia makes, the quality has to be really varied...

I'm glad you're such an avid fan of my blog that you know about the last two jobs I had... Sadly, mentioning them doesn't prove your point however, and generally makes you an asshole for personally attacking me.
Please fuck off now, any more comments you leave will be deleted.
